About us

Editors Note

W
inter fun starts early in our lives. It is a simple beginning: perhaps little more than making snow angels and throwing snowballs. And whether we’re 4 or 40, we never really outgrow that joy, because there is something inherently playful about snow. And as most people who live in the Wood River Valley know, the possibilities for fun in the snow only expand from those simple beginnings. Skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, ice hockey, ski joring, snowshoeing, sledding, snowmobiling—name it and it’s yours for the doing.

The Wood River Valley is an unusual place in that almost everyone here makes an effort to integrate fun—winter or summer—into his or her workaday life. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Nonetheless, there is a value placed on that fun that is hard to quantify.

In this issue of the Sun Valley Guide, we meet people who seek out that value and bring it to others. These are people like Marc Mast who brings skiing joy to people with disabilities, or die hard ski bums cum business men like Bobbie Burns, Mike Brunetto and Ed Scott. We delve into the art of encaustic painting and the glass art of Jacques Bordeleau. We look back at an Idaho pioneer, filmmaker Nell Shipman, and explore elegant ideas for small spaces in the home. In the end, we top it off with a look at organic beef and the roaring return of the martini. After all, this is supposed to be fun, isn’t it?
