editor's note
From the very
beginning—1936 when the Proctor lift opened the era of alpine skiing—Sun
Valley has always carried with it an air of glamour and celebrity.
Nonetheless, it has been at heart a place to do things. People come here
not to be seen, but rather to be outside in the elements, enjoying the
pure Idaho air and mountains, whether that entails skiing, snowboarding
or just sitting by a stream.
The natural beauty of
winter in the Sun Valley area certainly inspires. But more to the point
is the attitude of those who live and visit here. In many parts of the
country people begrudgingly put up with winter simply to get to the
summer months. Not so, here. There’s a rarely contained passion for
winter in this admittedly self-selected population that is both
infectious and invigorating.
If you don’t believe
that, read on. You’ll meet some of the people who work and play in this
lovely place—people who, come every November, are scanning the skies,
waiting for those first, ever-so-elegant flakes to blanket their world.

Tina Cole has
lived and skied in the Wood River Valley not quite as long as the people
featured in her article but is definitely heading in that direction. She
writes freelance, exhibits watercolor series periodically and skis,
hikes and travels with family and friends at every opportunity.
Dick Dorworth is a columnist/reporter for the Idaho Mountain
Express and a freelance writer. He has lived in the Wood River Valley
for many years and, despite a great deal of exploration, has not found
better alpine, Nordic or backcountry skiing anywhere in North America.
Dana DuGan is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express. She
writes about the arts and education issues.
Gregory Foley is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express.
He is the author of a novel,
“The Clarity of Light,” and the former news editor of a Pulitzer
Prize-winning weekly newspaper in Marin County, California.
Matt Furber is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express.
Writing is his tool for expressing rewarding experiences found exploring
the outdoors, learning foreign languages and contemplating
cross-cultural differences at home and abroad.
Greg Moore is a part-time reporter for the Idaho Mountain Express
and teaches skiing for the Sun Valley Company.
Pat Murphy, longtime Florida and Arizona newspaper reporter,
editor and publisher, is a freelance writer living in Ketchum.
David N. Seelig is both a freelance photographer and a staff
photographer for the Idaho Mountain Express. He was in New York for
years working as a rock ’n’ roll and sports photographer. His work of
Bruce Springsteen and Madonna will soon be in the rock ’n’ roll Hall of
Fame.
Greg Stahl learned the hard way while researching “Simply
Scotch,” that Scotch whisky is meant to be consumed with care and
appreciation. Sip, Greg, sip.
Elizabeth Sullivan moved to the Sun Valley area from Southern
California where she was a group managing editor for Primedia Inc.’s Hot
Bike, Hot Rod Bikes and Street Chopper magazines, and previously worked
with its Motor Trend, Surfer, Snowboarder, Powder, Bike and Skateboarder
magazines. Currently she is the PR/Sales Coordinator at Scott USA.
Megan Thomas is a recent graduate of Colby College who returned
to her Idaho roots for the Rocky Mountain High and a graduate degree
from the University of Ketchum.
